type='text'>Developmental objectives for children attending Marshall School-Elephant Class

In the Elephant Class

The following are the objectives for the academic year that the daily, weekly and monthly lesson plans are based on. These core objectives are developmentally appropriate for four to five year old children and include the basic skills necessary for a successful transition into kindergarten. Regular staff meetings are held during the year to discuss if the objectives are being met and changes to the lesson plans are implemented if necessary. Unfortunately, we arrived a little too late to get a good warm up. We did get a chance to get some noodles from a roadside rest area. Of course the fact that the shredded carrots had an odd tint to them didn't phase Chris or Fraser.

Pic. 1 Fraser is teaching Chris how to improve is tan lines during a race. Tyler is laughing at Chris' backward helmet cover.

Fortunately, the race was shortened from

25 km. to 20 km. just before the start (though no one told the foreign riders). Bad luck, in the form of questionable food, plagued Chris at the start through the first half of the race. Needless to say, Chris felt terrible and had a lousy start. It didn't help that Fraser pushed the pace from the start, taking Tyler and 5 other riders with him. During the second half of the race Chris felt much better and managed to pass several riders on his way to a very respectable finish.

Pic. 2 Not yet able to read Chinese, Chris is unable to decipher the signs. Fraser was just confused as to why there were two identical signs one meter apart.

Tyler sat in with the leaders and Fraser got dropped about 3 km. from the finish. Tyler grabbed third place in the final sprint. Fraser took home 5th place. Overall it was nice to see 2 Bianchi riders on the "podium."

Pic. 3 Tyler is third. The race started in the afternoon, about an hour after the organizers said it would start. This misunderstanding lead to Fraser doing his best to imitate a rally racer, much to the consternation of the passengers in the car. Annie repeatedly asked about the missing seatbelts.

Pic. 1 Beefcake prepares for the race by sitting with his dog. The lack of lucky headband would prove disastrous.

It was also a concern for team organiser JoAnne that half of the riders were not at the start area, nor could she reach them by phone. Eventually everyone arrived safely and got in a good warmup.

It was looking like it was going to rain but the rain held off for the race. This was not necessarily a blessing becuase the humidity must have been approaching 98% with no wind. These conditions made the race somewhat uncomfortable.

The organiser decided that the first lap
would be a neutral lap and it was lead by a rider with sandals on a Giant carbon fibre bike. You can see him on the start line in the picture on the right. The race started well with Beefcake and Fraser shooting off the front. Ricecake and Tim (who was riding his beautiful new Rocky Mountain) followed closely behind.

Pic. 2 Tim is more intersted in the sights than the race. Beefcake prepares for the pain. Ricecake hides at the back. Fraser decides he wants to ride helmetless.

Eric started to have problems with his shifting on the first lap but still managed to lead onto the second lap. From there on the eight remaining laps of suffereing were all that was left before the happiness of finishing. Fraser managed to take the lead from Beefcake and never looked back. Beefcake suffered greatly with no granny gear and was, at times, forced to push his bike up the steep hill.

Ricecake was not used to the helmet covers and the heat that they trap. He was riding well until he got heatstroke and had to withdraw. He mentioned that his head was going to explode. Note to Taiwanese race officials: The helmet covers are too hot. Give us 2 jersey numbers and one for the bike in XC races. Road racers should have helmet stickers and jersey numbers.

Pic. 3 Tim flies across the lumpy pavement on his brand new ride.

The race sorted out on the steep climb. A few riders were forced to push their bikes while most just suffered in their smallest gear. The suffereing was made worse by the brutal humidity. By the end of the race it look as though the racers had stopped for a quick swim in the nearby river. Fraser won the race, Beefcake squeezed out a third place and time took home a check for fourth.

Pic. 4 A determined Beefcake with his usual, unusual, flat back riding style.

Overall the race was quite a success. The course was pretty tough due to the climb and fun descent. Now we just have to get that skinny Tim out training on a roadbike. He has the perfect figure to win some hill climb races.

Pic. 5 The winners on the "podium" with checks in hand. It was quite flat but they only blocked off one lane of traffic so it was a little narrow. They didn't bother to tow the cars from the side of the course which made the finish especially dangerous. More on that later.

Chris, Tyler and Fraser all started at the same time in this 44 km. race. For the first bit people were quite nervous and there were a few crashes. There was even one crash in the middle of a straight road, about 3 minutes after the start. It was an omen of things to come.

Pic. 1 Chris warming up on busted up rollers.

Eventually the race picked up some speed and Tyler tried to make a move with about 2.5 km to go. He got sucked back so we all waited for the bunch sprint. Unfortunately a rider unclipped and ping-ponged across the road a few times. Tyler managed to avoid this but Chris and Fraser were a little less lucky. Chris made it around by riding into traffic but this cost him a couple of seconds and probably first place. The rider managed to run into Fraser several times and knocked him out of contention. That, as they say, is racing.

Tyler finished on top of the podium for the second time of the day with a win in the 2.5 km hill climb. Fraser threatend to kick Chris off the team if he was beaten by the riders with triple rings and mountain bikes. Apparently the threat worked and he finished a surprising seventh. Had he not been struck with mechanical difficulties he would likely have podiumed. Fraser avenged his loss in the morning's road race by winning his category.

Pic. 2: Fraser and Chris after a successful hill climb. Note that Chris' lime green helmet matches his bike. What a fashion disaster.

Pic. 3: Tyler on top of the podium.

Pic. 4: Fraser in the middle. Strangely, this one wasn't held at the same location as last year. All riders prerode the course once before the race. There were a bit disppointed because it wasn't very challenging. Perhaps the organizer had a telepathic connection with the riders becuase he decided to change the XC course a day before the race. He put in a 1K hill climb on road. The riders were hoping for some more technical parts in the course. The riders were pleased that they removed most of the trash from the trail before the race.

Pic 1: Beefcake coming up!

Timothy is newly arrived American who did quite well in his first race in Taiwan. He had numerous crashes (into other riders). Perhaps his name should be changed to something that involves an allusion to hockey players. Feel free to suggest another nickname.

This was Stephen "Ricecake" 's first race in Taiwan. He finished 5th in his category, which is still considered a podium finish. It took us a while to get down to Kaohsiung from Taichung. Yes, indeed, the driver got LOST! However, we finally made it after driving around lost for about half an hour.

We got up pretty early the next morning to check out the course. The riders got a chance to preride the course. One third of the course was paved and the rest was off-road. It was quite hot and the apparently they farmed mosquitoes beside the race course.

The course was perfect for Eric "Beefcake" becuase it had two steep climbs and was very technical. This explains why he won his first mountain bike race in Taiwan. His win surprized everyone at the race.

Pic 1:Beefcake after the race, just before he puked. Note the guy peeing in the background.

Pic 2: Fraser riding up on the paved section.

Pic 3: Beefcake wins and Fraser finishes second!
